IACS CASE STUDIES

Challenge

Information and Communication Technology is becoming increasingly important for the delivery of essential services. Recent incidents have increased awareness of the vulnerability of IACS to cyber-attacks which could disrupt physical infrastructure systems and networks. This makes security of IACS an important part of Critical Infrastructure Protection.

Focus of work

The high-level aims of this group are:

  • Information exchange on the overall landscape for IACS security and Smart Grid security;
  • Identification of good practices that reduce the risk from human factors;
  • Identification of the main challenges related to test protocols and procedures for security solutions for IACS.

The initial focus will be on IACS standards, test protocols and procedures.

The work programme - Main deliverables

This group aims to identify the need to test and certify IACS used in critical infrastructure by developing use cases that demonstrate, within the technical architectures of IACS, the nature of the vulnerabilities of IACS case studies to malicious attacks, and hence where EU-testing and certification could mitigate these risks. The use cases will be developed for the most common types of deployment of IACS in European utilities.
