ERNCIP Webinar Series on Water Security 2020

ERNCIP Water Webinars 2020

Improving water security planning and preparation to recovery and remediation from source to customer

30.11.20 – 09.12.20, Virtual events

The webinar series on Water Security was organized by the Thematic Group on “Chemical and Biological Risks to DW” of the ERNCIP Office. The series aimed to provide the framework of security aspects in drinking water supply and to introduce the key elements of the Water Security Plan (WSecP), bringing together knowledge and experience of high-level experts from the field. The webinar series was meant for utility managers, researchers, policy experts, consultants, authorities, and operators.

During the 6 webinar sessions, the main aspects and components of the Water Security Plan undertaken by the ERNCIP “Drinking Water” TG were presented, providing an overview of security-related risks to DW, applications of continuous monitoring systems for event detection, modelling approaches and mitigation solutions through lessons learned and real-life experiences. This initiative gave the opportunity for the ERNCIP water group to present proposals for the Water Security Plan for validation by the stakeholders and the recent guidance documents which have been published on the WSecP addressed to water utilities, describing the process from water security planning and preparation to recovery and remediation. The aim of a Water Security plan is to support operators to develop an effective response to a wide range of hazards, typically those considered to have a low probability of occurrence but with a potential high impact (e.g. malicious acts), that could compromise the supply of safe drinking water. The TG experts proposed to develop a guidance document enabling water utility operators to prepare their own water security plan which would complement an already existing Water Safety Plan. Various participants with multi-disciplinary expertise joined the series from all over Europe and even beyond it, sharing views, concerns and priorities on the topic with different perspectives for a water-secure future at EU level.
